“Hello everyone! I am Benny the Bendy sloth

I live high in the trees where everything moves slowly and calmly. Every morning i wake up, stretch my long arms and legs, and take a big peaceful breath.

But one day i realised something… moving slowly actually makes me stronger and steadier.

So now i travel around helping children learn how to move like a sloth — slowly, carefully and with big stretches.

Are you ready to move like a sloth with us today?”

Pilates for children offers a unique blend of physical and mental benefits that cater to their developmental needs. These classes, meticulously designed by Kellie, a specialist in Children's Pilates, aims to foster growth in every aspect of a child's life. Recognising that children's bodies and minds are in a constant state of development, Pilates provides a structured yet flexible environment where both boys and girls can strengthen their muscles, improve their posture, and enhance their coordination skills. Pilates is widely used by professional athletes.

The practice is not just about physical fitness; it's an approach to health. By incorporating elements of well-being and mindfulness, Pilates helps children manage stress and anxiety, which are increasingly common in today's fast-paced world. The classes are crafted to be engaging, ensuring that children enjoy activities like skipping, jumping, and hopping, which are fun yet challenging. These activities are complemented by Pilates fundamentals that promote control, alignment, breathing, stamina, and the mind-body connection—skills that are beneficial both on and off the mat.

By participating in Pilates, children not only build a strong foundation for physical activity but also develop valuable life skills such as concentration, attention, and self-awareness. This balanced approach to fitness and well-being positions Pilates as an invaluable tool for children's growth and development.

Pilates for children is a multifaceted approach to physical and emotional well-being. By incorporating exercises that enhance core stability and strength, children not only develop better posture and body awareness but also experience mood improvements.

The integration of emotional regulation strategies within these exercises teaches children how to navigate feelings of frustration, fatigue, worry, or anxiety effectively. For younger participants, the inclusion of music, scarves, and balls transforms the classes into a playful and imaginative environment, fostering a sense of joy and engagement in physical activity.

Recognising that play is a critical component of physical development, especially up to the age of 7, Pilates programs are tailored to harness this natural inclination for movement. Through fun and dynamic activities, children can improve their posture, alignment, flexibility, coordination, and overall strength.

Additionally, these programs place a strong emphasis on enhancing fine and gross motor skills, attention span, concentration, and the ability to regulate emotions, contributing to a holistic development that prepares children for various life challenges.

Benefits of Pilates for children.....

  • Managing stress and mindfulness & Improves Mental Health: Pilates brings your awareness into your body, concentrating on how its moving and how you are achieving the movement.  This can be very calming and bring your focus into the moment. It gives children time out from other stresses and time to concentrate on themselves and feel confident about how they are moving. This can reduce anxiety and stress. Exercise promotes the neurotransmitters in the brain that elevate mood and sooth emotions. It also helps by sending out natural chemicals from the brain called endorphins which are natural painkillers, aid sleep and alleviate stress. Even just five minutes of exercise can start to have these stress relieving results. Using breath we work with children to enable them to understand their body awareness.

  • Awareness & Confidence: Children can gain more awareness of their bodies through Pilates, learning how to move efficiently. This is an important time as they begin to formulate physical attributes that they will take through life, for example; they way they walk, bend over, lift heavy objects etc. Pilates can help to establish correct principles of movement that children will continue throughout their adult lives. exercises require concentration, coordination, and memory, which can help improve cognitive function in children.

  • Improves Posture: With many children spending hours staring at a screen each day, they are beginning to slouch. This can lead to a muscular imbalance which may contribute to aches, pains and back problems as they enter adulthood, but Pilates can help to correct this, alleviating the pain and preventing injuries. Children that participate in Pilates classes have better spinal alignment and posture.

  • Strength: Pilates helps to improve the circulation of blood, strengthening the core muscles of the body - helping children to conserve their energy, as well as keeping them lean and improving their athletic performance.

  • Improves Flexibility: The exercises practised in Pilates help to maintain flexibility in children's muscles and tendons. This is useful if they wish to participate in other sports and is also great for their overall fitness.

  • Balance & Concentration: School can be mentally demanding, and is often a lot for children to absorb. The focus required in Pilates will transfer to the classroom and you may start to see improvements in their academic performance. The balance and coordination combined with strength help to give the increased body awareness.  This will enable them to cope with the growth spurts and keep good control of their muscles and joints.

4 - 7 yr age group. Imagine a place where children's laughter fills the air, where tiny feet move in harmony with their imaginations, and where each movement tells a story of adventure and discovery. This is the essence of the classes described, a magical hour where children embark on a journey that not only strengthens their bodies but also nurtures their minds. Through the playful fusion of Pilates and storytelling, these sessions offer a unique blend of physical and emotional enrichment.

As the children twist and stretch, mimicking the movements of animals in the wild, they learn more than just the importance of physical health; they learn to harness their inner strength and channel their energy positively. The classes are a safe haven where every child is an integral part of the story, contributing to the narrative while achieving personal milestones. The sticker chart is not just a record of attendance; it's a map of achievements, each sticker a testament to a challenge overcome, a skill learned, a fear conquered.

By the end of each session, as the children unwind with calming exercises, they carry with them more than just the joy of the day's adventure. They leave equipped with the tools to face life's ups and downs with a balanced posture and a balanced mind, ready to step confidently into the world, one imaginative story at a time.

The classes are for an hour, during this time children will have time to have a snack, rest and fun. These classes are designed to be a fun learning experience for children, combining physical activity with emotional well-being.

Overall, the sessions aim to enhance core strength, coordination, flexibility, balance, and posture while also equipping children with strategies to manage their emotions, ensuring they are well-prepared to face various situations with resilience and calmness.

7-9 yr age group. Imagine a Pilates class where every stretch and pose is an adventure, a story unfolding with each movement. This week, the theme is superheroes, and the room buzzes with excitement. Children, dressed in capes and masks, strike powerful poses, embodying strength and courage. As they transition from the 'Mighty Mountain' to the 'Stealthy Cat', they're not just exercising; they're on a heroic quest, saving the world one pose at a time. Laughter fills the air when the 'Silly Monkey' move comes up, reminding everyone that fun is at the heart of learning.

Partnership work becomes a dynamic duo's effort to keep the city safe, fostering teamwork and physical coordination. The rhythmical work is their secret weapon, enhancing their musicality and timing, crucial for any superhero's graceful manoeuvres. Props become magical tools, a hula hoop transforms into a force field, and a ball becomes a globe to save. The class is a blend of games, fitness, and storytelling, where every child is the protagonist of their own tale. As the session winds down, relaxation time becomes a moment of reflection, a superhero's meditation for mindfulness and peace. This is more than a Pilates class; it's a journey into imagination, movement, and joy.

This approach not only keeps the children engaged and moving but also fosters their imagination and concentration.

The comprehensive curriculum aims to enhance various skills such as mindfulness, core strength, coordination, flexibility, balance, and posture.. This method ensures that each child benefits from a well-rounded experience that promotes both physical health and emotional well-being.
