Pilates is classed as a muscle-strengthening activity, which can help you maintain a healthy weight. Classes can vary in intensity: they can be gentle, or dynamic and offer a solid workout. If you want to lose weight, you're advised to combine Pilates with a healthy diet and some aerobic activities, such as swimming, walking and cycling.
Pilates is a proven method of exercise that involves slow and precise movements which focuses on realigning joints and strengthening and rebalancing muscles.
Here are some of the ways in which consistently attending Pilates sessions can benefit you:
Corrects misalignment, reducing the risk of wear and tear and risk of injury and back pain
Prevents and manages low back pain
Reshapes the body, creating longer, leaner and more toned muscles
Increases flexibility and balance
Aligns and strengthens your spine, pelvis, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles
Improves your posture and body awareness
More mobile joints and stronger bones
The use of controlled breath helps to undo physical tension helping to reduce stress and anxiety
Experience relief from aches and pains and get that "feel good" factor and move more freely
You will feel stretched and refreshed
Pilates can relieve menopause symptoms - good for hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and weight gain
Pilates strengthens your pelvic muscles which prevents urinary problems
Improves posture and movement
Relieves pain and spasms by strengthening your muscles and endurance
... but don't just take my word, please come and try a class for yourself.

What to Wear and Bring to the Session?
I suggest you wear comfortable gym/exercise attire, which is not excessively baggy so I am able to see your neck and your ankles alignment. Please do not wear trainers but suitable socks with grip or bare feet are good. You will need a Pilates/exercise mat.
I have a number of blocks and bands available for you to use during class, which will be sanitised after each session.
I have an injury can I still do Pilates?
As with any of exercise, if you have any kind of injury/medical condition please get the all clear from your GP or other medical professional (including a chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist) before you join the classes.
Do I need to book in advance or can I just turn up?
Pre-booking is essential for all classes. I do not accept walk-ins as I speak to all new members and ask you to complete a consent form and PARQ before attending a class. If you just turn up, with regret you will be turned away.
What is the Difference Between Pilates and Yoga?
Yoga is a spiritually based movement practice that uses breathing, meditation, chanting and stretching of the body by focusing the mind to achieve enlightenment. The more popular types of yoga use the technique of moving slowly into a pose and holding the pose while taking slow deep breaths.
Pilates is a secular movement practice (meaning it has no religious affiliation). Pilates uses the ideas of stretch and strength while moving with control. Stability and mobility teaches practitioners how to prevent injuries even when they are doing very complex actions (like ballet or surfing) and the focus is fitness. Pilates is dynamic - we rarely hold positions, we constantly move through exercises.
The 'mind' and mental aspect of Pilates is not to be underestimated though. Joseph Pilates believed in “strong mind, strong body.” The brain and the body must work together to achieve strength, balance and health. A great deal of concentration, control and focus is needed for following Pilates techniques and instructions. You will learn that constructive application of techniques paired with mind focus gives great results. Pilates can engage and improve your perseverance and concentration for the life outside the studio too. Besides, it is much more fun and engaging when you put your mind to it!
